Palm Springs in 3 Days: Sunshine, Sin & a Little Desert Mischief

Palm Springs has always had a reputation for being a little glamorous, a little naughty and just plain good-looking.

It’s the kind of place where mid-century architecture meets poolside cocktails, where the desert somehow makes everything feel more dramatic, and where “I’m just going away for the weekend” can very quickly turn into “Should we stay another night?”

So, naturally, I said yes.

If you have three days to play in Palm Springs, prepare yourself for a delicious mix of sunshine, good food, beautiful hotels, desert adventures, and just enough indulgence to make you forget what day it is.

Here’s how I’d spend 72 hours in this gloriously stylish little desert playground.

DAY ONE: CHECK IN, TURN UP & GET YOUR GLAM ON

The first rule of Palm Springs?

Do not rush.

You’re in the desert. Time moves differently here, and frankly, you should too.

Check into your hotel, drop your bags, put on something fabulous (or at least something that looks fabulous beside a swimming pool), and head straight for the water.

Palm Springs is practically built for pool lounging. Think bright umbrellas, mountain views, cold drinks, and that delicious feeling of having absolutely nowhere you need to be. And if your first cocktail arrives before your suitcase is unpacked? You’re doing it right.

Explore Downtown Palm Springs

Once you've sufficiently soaked up the sun, and possibly a little tequila, wander down Palm Canyon Drive.

Downtown Palm Springs is wonderfully walkable and packed with boutiques, galleries, restaurants, bars, and enough mid-century eye candy to keep your camera working overtime. Take your time. Pop into the shops. Admire the architecture. People-watch. Buy something you absolutely do not need but will later insist was an essential part of the trip.

Dinner With a Side of Drama

For your first night, make dinner an event.

Palm Springs does casual beautifully, but it also knows how to turn up the volume when the sun goes down. Choose somewhere with a great patio, order something delicious, and don't be afraid to linger. This is not the city for eating quickly and rushing home. And afterward? Go for a drink. Or two.

Palm Springs after dark has a certain energy. The mountains disappear into the night, the neon starts glowing, and suddenly that “early morning hike” you planned sounds suspiciously ambitious.

DAY TWO: DESERT ADVENTURE & POOLSIDE GLUTTONY

Wake up early-ish. Not offensively early. You're on vacation.

Grab breakfast and get ready to see the desert from a different perspective.

Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

One of the easiest ways to get a serious change of scenery is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. In a matter of minutes, you'll go from desert heat to the dramatically cooler alpine landscape of Mount San Jacinto. It's slightly surreal, and that's part of the fun. One minute you're surrounded by palms and cacti; the next you're looking at pine trees and mountain trails.

Bring a camera.

And a light jacket.

Yes, even if you're wearing shorts. Trust me.

Back to the Pool

After your mountain adventure, return to Palm Springs and embrace the most important part of any desert itinerary: Doing absolutely nothing.

Find a pool. Find a lounger. Find a cold beverage. Stay there. You have earned it.

This is where Palm Springs really gets you. There is something wonderfully decadent about spending an afternoon doing very little while enormous mountains loom in the distance.

Read a book. Take a nap. Order lunch poolside. Ignore your emails with confidence.

Sunset, Please

As the afternoon fades, get yourself outside. Palm Springs sunsets have a way of showing off. The San Jacinto Mountains turn golden, pink, orange, and every other color that makes you wonder whether someone has been editing the sky.

This is your moment for the obligatory sunset photo.

Take it.

Post it.

Pretend you just happened to be standing there looking effortlessly amazing!

DAY THREE: VINTAGE VIBES & A LITTLE DESERT WANDERLUST

By day three, you're probably starting to understand Palm Springs. It's not really about checking things off a list. It's about the mood. So lean into it.

Go Mid-Century Crazy

Palm Springs is practically a pilgrimage site for lovers of mid-century modern design. Spend the morning exploring the neighborhoods and admiring the iconic homes and architecture that helped make the city famous. The clean lines. The dramatic glass. The palm trees. The mountains. It's all ridiculously photogenic.

You may also find yourself wondering why your own house suddenly looks terribly boring.

Consider yourself warned.

Lunch & Last-Minute Shopping

Head back downtown for lunch and a little shopping. Pick up something vintage, something colorful, or something completely impractical that will forever remind you of Palm Springs.

A pair of sunglasses you didn't need? Perfect. A ridiculous caftan? Even better. A piece of desert-inspired art. Now you're being responsible.

One Last Adventure

Before you leave, take some time to get beyond the manicured streets and into the desert itself. Whether you choose a hike, a guided desert excursion, or simply a scenic drive, give yourself a little space to appreciate just how wild the landscape really is. Palm Springs is fascinating because of the contrast.

Luxury and wilderness. Glamour and grit. Pool parties and cactus. High heels and hiking boots. It shouldn't all work together. And yet somehow, it does.

THE FINAL COCKTAIL

Eventually, you'll have to leave. But before you pack your suitcase and head back to reality, find one last beautiful spot for a cocktail. Raise your glass to three days of sunshine, questionable decisions, excellent meals, and absolutely no regrets.

Because Palm Springs isn't really a place you visit once. It's the kind of place that gets under your skin.

You come for the sunshine. You stay for the cocktails. You fall a little bit in love with the lifestyle. And then you start looking at real estate listings.
